The shocking implication of this astonishing declaration is one of the most awful and unpalatable bible truths that we (humanity) struggle to accept.
In fact, its initial declaration is one that we tend to fervently debate and aggressively deny. That is, that we (humanity) have a kindred association with the “evil one,” the Devil.
We challenge it and counter it by passionately declaring, “but I am a good person.” Although, we may not believe this to be true regarding our neighbor.
Nevertheless, Scripture argues, and the record of human history rightly affirms that the reality of our inherent sin-nature (depraved propensities) is clear proof of our spiritual ties with the Devil.
Too, herein we are made to see the deplorable nature of sin; and understand our desperate need to be delivered from its dominating influence and its sentence of eternal condemnation nation.
We would rather attribute our moral disfunctions to some genetic deficiency; a lapse of enlightening knowledge; or just flatly blame something or somebody else for our heinous and clearly destructive behavior rather than humbly admit that we (humanity) inherently are identified with to the Fallen One, by our kindred inherent sin nature.
Yet, despite creating an ever-growing list of contrived disfunctions, disorders, and devised reasons for our (humanity) ungodly and often immensely deplorably wicked conduct and social behaviors, the Word of God is staunchly unapologetic in its declaration, and the reality of our inherently fallen spiritual condition.
The Lord Jesus insightful explained to us Matthew 15:18-19: “But those things which proceed out of the mouth come forth from the heart; and they defile the man. “For out of the heart proceed evil thoughts, murders, adulteries, fornications, thefts, false witness, blasphemies:”
While confronting His malicious murderous adversaries during his earthly sojourn, the Lord directly declared to them in John 44: “Ye are of your father the devil, and the lusts of your father ye will do. He was a murderer from the beginning, and abode not in the truth, because there is no truth in him. When he speaketh a lie, he speaketh of his own: for he is a liar, and the father of it.”
Too, Ephesians 2:1-2 explains to the “born again” Christ follower: “And you hath he quickened, who were dead in trespasses and sins; “Wherein in time past ye walked according to the course of this world, according to the prince of the power of the air, the spirit that now worketh in the children of disobedience.”
Again, we are forced to confront the ugly reality: “He that committeth sin is of the devil.” (1 Jn. 3:8a)
And this unalterable physical and spiritual realization make the necessity of the redemptive work of Christ and absolute imperative.
Now obviously this divine assertion is not going to get rave reviews by the general population of humanity because in our contemporary era, we have already vigorously attempted to trivialize or flatly strike the word “sin” from or verbal and written vocabularies.
However, the practical realities of its existence can never be completely ignored or denied; namely because of the irrefutable reality of death (its signature mark on every life) in this present sphere.
Romans 5;12 educates us by explaining: “Wherefore, as by one-man sin entered into the world, and death by sin; and so death passed upon all men, for that all have sinned.”
Thus, each of us are personally and collectively repeated forced to face this awful reality that repeatedly shatters our imaginary perspectives toward life and compels us to again consider the unalterable truth set forth in Romans 6:23a that charges: “For the wages of sin is death.”
But, we need not stop at that point of realized despair. We can read further and gladly learn from the second segment of the verse: “but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.”
Yet, these are realities that we must be honestly willing to consider and earnestly act upon.
Far too many of us have sunned/are shunning this most evident of life’s realities and are foolishly attempting to convince ourselves that such a dire need simply does not exist.
Sadly, in our condition of spiritual blindness, we have convinced ourselves that we cannot be “that bad;” life cannot be “that bad;” and our eternal destiny will not end “that badly.” However, we fail to recognize this posture is precisely what the Devil desires each of us to adapt until it is too late to be changed.
As he successfully deceived Eve so many centuries ago; he is yet deceiving others to bypass the singular route (the Cross) that leads to eternal life.
In John 5:39-40, the Lord Jesus sorrowfully conveyed to all who follow this futile path: "Search the scriptures; for in them ye think ye have eternal life: and they are they which testify of me. And ye will not come to me, that ye might have life."
